Join us for our Meet the Artist event featuring Jim Murphy as he shares with you his exhibit entitled: Pushing Paint Around
Artist Statement:
This exhibition is a survey of landscapes executed in New England, Newfoundland and the West Cork region of the Republic of Ireland. All began as studies where I seek to capture the mood. Each painting is developed to completion at my Standing Stone Studio in South Ashfield. These paintings will hang at Black Birch Vineyard until the end of February. I hope spending time with these paintings will spur an emotional response and some sort of pleasure.
Artist Bio:
A native of Norwood, Massachusetts, Jim Murphy was born in 1947. Encouraged by his parents, he absorbed himself in drawing as a child. As a young man he studied at Massachusetts College of Art, graduating in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. After a nearly 30 year hiatus from oil painting he returned to the discipline. He has found his most stimulating and satisfying painting experiences in the coastal areas of outer Cape Cod, Cape Ann, and Maine; the wooded hilltowns of Western Massachusetts; and in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Jim Murphy is represented by The Inn at Norton Hill, Ashfield; Bear Hollow Antiques, Florence; Trolley Stop, Shelburne Falls; Deerfield Valley Art Association, Northfield; Rockport Art Association, Rockport; Granite Shore Gallery, Rockport; North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester; The Bryan Memorial Gallery, Jeffersonville, VT; and at his own Standing Stone Studio, South Ashfield.
“Jim Murphy’s painterly realism shows the influence of Hopper’s simplicity and structure, with the color and brushwork of American Impressionists. Working in plein air from Connecticut to Nova Scotia, he interprets his native New England in all of its seasons.”
